BZ in Action: Calibration of a spherical tank of 4,000 m³ capacity for LPG
BZ in Action
Calibration of a spherical tank with a capacity of 4,000 m³, intended for the storage of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) under semi-refrigeration and semi-pressurization conditions.
Methodology applied:
- API Standard 2552-65 (R2012): Method for Measurement and Calibration of Spheres and Spheroids
- ISO Standard 23505:2025: Calibration of Spherical Tanks – External Electro-Optical Distance-Ranging Method

The calibration of spherical tanks from the outside is mainly based on the measurement of three (3) representative perimeters: one equatorial perimeter and two polar perimeters, in addition to thickness measurement.
From these measurements, the internal dimensions of the tank are determined and the liquid height vs volume relationship is established, giving rise to the final Calibration Table.
The perimeter measurements were carried out using our Topcon OS-105 Laser Total Station, allowing the obtaining of results with high precision and accuracy, fundamental for the safety and operational control of this type of critical assets.
